Stories Suspended, 2024

Ox and Deer accordion books and book stand. Both books are made of laser cut bristol with casebound plywood covers with handwritten and colored pencil illustrated fables; the accompanying book stand is made of wood with gold vegan leather embellishments. “Stories Suspended” ties in two popular Korean folktales I grew up reading as a child with elements of spirituality and Korean Shamanism. Each book is in the shape of a kindred animal spirit featured in the story it tells — with the ox book for “Korean Cinderella” (Kongjwi and Patjwi / 콩쥐와 팥쥐) and the deer book for “The Fairy and the Woodcutter” (선녀와 나무꾼). Both animals — and stories — rest among the tree branches of the book stand inspired by 5th-7th century Silla Crowns. The Tree of Life, represented in both the book stand and original crowns, are a common Shamanistic symbol of the connection between heaven and earth, secular and mystical.
